Paradigm Playing Cards by Derek Grimes
LIMITED EDITION: Only 2500 printed! Will NOT be reprinted.
A Paradigm is a standard, perspective, or set of ideas. A Paradigm is a way of looking at something. I set out to do just that, and after a year in the making, Paradigm Playing Cards is here. The cardistry community is fascinating in every aspect of the word. I wanted to design a deck that was engineered specifically to your favorite flourish while also being a magician's best friend. A crossover deck in many ways, or the best of both worlds. I wanted to design a deck with which you could begin by showing the slickest packet cut off, then right after do an Ambitious Card routine! With pretty standardized Pips and indices and standard reimagined Courts, this deck is sure to not raise any suspicion. Although the concept and design are mine, I couldn't have brought this deck to its final glory without my two best friends.
Daniel Schneider (Black Roses Playing Cards, Orbit, Polyantha) and Luke Wadey (Mono-X, Grid, Typographic Playing Cards) played a pivotal role in the life of this deck. Daniel helped bring the visions of the number and court cards to life and is the leader in custom Courts. He proved it again with the six custom Courts in this deck. Luke took my original back design, broke it down and reimagined it, giving it depth and formatting it to an intricate grid; whilst also designing an infinite tuck box design, perfect to the style of the deck.

Thanks for the heads up, but im going to pass on these. While its an interesting concept, the heads on the court cards really kill the feel of the deck

Oh, man. This is the second deck I have seen recently with a bizarre treatment to the pips. In this case, they are........tilted? And in the case of the court cards, they are.......tilted AND chopped?!
This deck hurts me, physically. And those Jokers. FML, SMH, OMG

Nope, nope, nope. Awful.
I don't wanna bash on somebody. But seriously, when putting this out there, what are peeps thinking with a design like this?
I really wanna try to understand this. I get that tastes differ and things like that are to a certain extinct subjective, but is there seriously anybody out there, that thinks a one-way, awkward 90s screensaver graphic back design with cut-off head one-way courts is even close to being a mediocre deck?
You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash thatβs being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.

The traditional courts have been replaced with post-millennial douchebags and everything is at a Dutch angle. This is a six pack of PBR away from being a bad college film.

What? One needs two designers to make something like this... Gimme 1,000 bucks and an hour with MS paint and I'll give you something like this...Daniel Schneider (Black Roses Playing Cards, Orbit, Polyantha) and Luke Wadey (Mono-X, Grid, Typographic Playing Cards) played a pivotal role in the life of this deck.

Re: Paradigm Playing Cards by Derek Grimes
I could confirm that the deck is solely the creator's idea and concept, and both DS and LW only helped in terms making it come true. Anything else, including the family members on the courts and the tilted angle, are all Grimes' idea. He should have put his name before naming these two designers who were mostly in the assisting position. Check his own review of the deck:shiroo56 wrote:What? Re: Paradigm Playing Cards by Derek Grimes
Hey guys! Came across this thread and just wanted to clarify a couple of things
Firstly, I would like to say I am not a post-millennial, and I do try not to be a douchebag so not sure how I became both on this thread haha.
Secondly though and mainly, the work Daniel and I did on this deck was of a productive nature, rather than conceptual. As Derek has happily stated in the past, it was a concept and idea he had sketched up but didn't have the tools or software to make it a reality. Personally, seeing that Daniel was very busy, I took the already designed back of card, readjusted the elements to a slightly different grid and gave them some more depth to finish off the card, as stated by Derek. Also, a tuck box needed doing, so I turned the back of card in to an infinity tuck in the same, preset style. For the card faces, Daniel helped a friend by creating his vision in the style you see.
The design, for any pros and cons (depending on individual tastes) is to be credited to Derek as you can see the style is very different to the work of Daniel or myself, and like Derek says, it's all his idea. I respect that, anyone can hate on the design, or love the design, it's each to their own, but I wish Murphys all the best with the deck regardless.
Imagine a friend wanted to bake a cake, they had all the ingredients and knew the recipe, but they didn't have an oven; this deck is the cake and DS and I are the oven lol. I hope those that purchase it enjoy it, and those who don't find something else more to their fancy in future
Cheers!

Re: Paradigm Playing Cards by Derek Grimes
I had no idea this depicted living people. Straight up, I thought it was an intentional caricature.
Mildly embarrassing for me, but on the other hand, that's not my chinstrap beard immortalized on a playing card so it could obviously be worse.

Hello... I'm the creator of this beautiful deck. I want to say first how disrespectful some of you are and also ill informed about some things as well. This is the reason this community is falling apart and everyone hates everyone. Because of keyboard warriors like some of you that hide behind a screen all day posting hate comments in the comfort of your own home. its disgusting. Also the gentleman below that said this is a "ONE WAY" back design?? Really! Not even close my friend. And the douchebag comment! Ummm... Why are we douchebags? Because were being positive in bringing something different to the magic/cardistry community, with our time rather than tear each other down in the comments of a forum? Oh and making fun of us for our age? Super mature ! I put a lot of time in bringing this community something not only different over the past year and a half , but that makes sense and is also fully functional in all design aspects. Every line, bar, circle, color and more was strategically placed for specific reason when doing packet cuts, flourishes, fans,etc... I have no problem if this is not the deck for you....I more than respect that! But to literally disrespect, and attack me and the deck itself is mind blowing. Everyday I see decks that are terrible and yet I don't get on websites and forums to tell the world how bothered I am that the deck entered my line of sight! C'mon... honestly! The point is if you actually gave this deck the opportunity to hit your fingertips. I honestly believe you might actually enjoy it. Like they say don't judge a book by its cover. I dont have any ill will towards any of you for voicing your opinions! But show respect. Thank you all for reading this and I only hope that next time you put something out into the world that people wont be harsh individuals and put you down like you did to me in this moment in time! Good luck.

Re: Paradigm Playing Cards by Derek Grimes
Well I ran across one of these for like $7 and decided to pick it up to fill out the edges of my Luke Wadey collection
I had totally forgotten about this thread though.... thoughtful reply from Luke, and Derek Grimes at least took the time to post and reply - even if it's a bit pearl-clutchy IMO ("Everyday I see decks that are terrible and yet I don't get on websites and forums to tell the world how bothered I am that the deck entered my line of sight!" -- that's like the whole point of this forum, card decks good and bad) ANYWAY! I also hate the crooked courts/aces and the jokers, too
But I like the back design a lot

Re: Paradigm Playing Cards by Derek Grimes
Everytime this deck pops up I could feel as dead inside as the king of spades looks... Luckily I'm far less bothered by this still butt ugly creation than Derek thinks.
$7 is still a lot for this... Like $57 too much...
I apologize for calling it a one-way back design back then. My bad. To my defense, my eyes automatically refuse to focus on things that are that ugly.
To end on a positive note, I like colours. This deck features colours
