As the wheel of the year continues to turn, we explore the origins of modern Halloween with Samhain, the Celtic festival of the dead which brings with it a host of strange stories and folklore.

Then we look past the harsh winter months to Imbolc, the festival of Bridgid that would later become Candlemas. Here we delve into her mythology and some curious characters who embody the celebration of the end of winter and the dawn of the spring.

A collaboration between Jocu and Evgenia Zhade

Faces remind me of Warrior Women, more than just the black and white drawings.

Samhain looks tasty; Imbolc not so much. I'm sure Boschiero&Newton will do a great job on the tucks but somehow grey tucks just aren't for me. Maybe it looks even more bad to me due to the contrast to Samhain.

I actually like the contrast on Imbolc itself to be honest.
I can understand next to Samhain’s dazzling purple it falls of a bit. But just looking at Imbolc itself it looks fine to me. I’ll probably go for both anyway and hopefully get some tasty treats from earlier Jocu campaigns along the way

I'm on the fence. I hate how beautifully colored the backs are and how contrasting the black & white courts are. Seems very mismatched. I also don't know why foiling the inside of tucks is so popular. I'd rather save a buck or two but maybe that's just me.
The artwork is beautiful and I backed the other pair of what I think is a series (I'm not good with other languages)? So I think I might get these, too but my wallet is hurting and $17 per deck (based on EB pair pricing), shipped is borderline for for me right now.

i feel the same about this. i really like the court designs even though i generally don't care for lines or banners separating the 2 halves. however, i do not like the back designs or colors. they should have let Evgenia design the backs as well. the designs do not go together at all and stand in very stark contrast. i was excited when i saw the courts and thought that this may be my first Jocu set but the backs are killing it for me.

Hey guys! Thanks for the support and feedback.

It’s interesting reading critiques of the design as we go over all this ourselves and it’s definitely a tough part of the design process. The decks are part of an eight deck series where we want each deck to be unique which is why we’re experimenting with some less obvious colour schemes. Grey isn’t my favourite colour either, but in the scheme of the wheel of the year it works well for the period in which Imbolc falls I think.

Another tricky thing is managing the artist/graphic aspects which I’ve come to learn are very different (as someone who can’t draw a thing). Alessandra has many strengths but graphic design is definitely her strongest, hence her usual style and also her doing the graphic design aspects of the decks including the tucks, backs and pips. Evgenia’s strength on the other hand is her beautiful line work art, but this would not work for the graphic elements which need to be more precise and symmetrical.

I’m really happy with the balance they’ve come to and Evgenia’s black and white artwork was what drew us to her in the first place, but we obviously need a splash of colour on the rest of the decks or we’d have eight black and white decks :) Evgenia’s art cannot be coloured easily without changing the style, so whilst it’s particular I’m please with the result. It’s cool that its not for everyone!

This is our first series of collaborations so I’m really happy they’re going well so far but I think the market for these is definitely more mythology and magic lovers than necessarily card collectors although there’s a big crossover.

There will be more true Jocu decks coming next year with just Alessandra at the helm and we will continue collaborating with various artists under the JocuCollabs account as opportunities arise. Evgenia has been a pleasure to work with and I look forward to seeing what comes next! Stay tuned!

Got the 4 decks now.
I like the idea of the booklets but they will end up collecting dust and wasting space. So didn’t go full on.
Not to mention delivery from within the EU. so I’m not getting hammered by customs and shipping costs!

I am just glad this collab happened between you and Evgenia Zhade! I would really love to see her artwork for real this time, since I still don't have the Dark Kingdom deck. I actually don't mind getting the booklets that accompanies the decks, since it's good reading material, although what bugs me is that I think it's a bit costly - maybe it's because of the leather bookmark

Earlier in the week we received the shipment of Samhain & Imbolc decks and are now well underway with assembly. The decks have come out wonderfully and look great next to their friends Beltane and Lughnasadh.

I'm thinking these may be the best court illustrations I've seen yet from Jocu. Well done.
