Since there are still 8 JP Games mystery bricks available and only 5 lucky winners before me I think I'll just claim it now if that's ok with you, it should make things a bit easier for people after me. I'll still make sure to PM hsbc when it's his turn. Thanks again everyone, I'm really happy and pretty surprised too, I'll try to throw some decks in next year :) you can update the spreadsheet, thank you!

It's probably best to just claim your prize when it's your turn to claim a prize, regardless of the math. It's just simpler for everyone who is keeping track to do so sequentially, which is how the rules have stated it would be done anyway.

Based on the rules, if you were to not speak up when it came to be your turn (because you had already posted in advance) you would be skipped and someone else would be added to the end of the list of winners.

Geez, did we really go an entire weekend with just one person having picked a prize? There's gotta be a more efficient way to do this next year. Probably not the best idea, but just to get the ball rolling - maybe in like groups of 10, and each group gets a day to pick? Have the 48/72hr or whatever window where you put your username down on a google doc, then grouped up in order, then each group gets a 24hr timeslot where they can pick a prize. If you don't respond to declare you're participating in the prize selection within the initial window, your name gets dropped. If you responded, but happen to miss your group's window, you get moved to the back of the line. If we have the same number of prizes w/ the same number of winners next year, we could get it done in a week and a half. Right now it's been over two weeks and we're not even halfway through. I understand it's unreasonable to expect everyone to stay glued to a forum during the whole process, which is why it'd be nice to have a set day you know you should be making your selection. It's weird people have to be tracked down and bothered to pick a prize, and it's a bit condescending to both people that donated a prize and also to people that wanted to win, but didn't (aka the losers).

I think there are also better ways for this by making stricter rules about leaving one’s contact info upon voting, and not just through the UC PM system, like for instance, add a “Please leave the best way to get in contact with you, either email, FB Messenger, or IG dms” (although I know the loophole would be privacy concerns...)

In terms of time of selection, I agree that we could enforce a 3-day limit or even shorter like a 48-hr limit where the person who’s reluctant to choose within this time automatically gets skipped until s/he replies anytime after. If his or her selection clashes with the people after them, the latter gets the priority of choice because the former had given up their priority during the time they’ve exceeded the time limit.

I realize a lot of people don’t care about the UC notifications that pop up in their inbox since all the messages from UC look the same in one’s inbox, regardless it’s a thread notification or a private message notification.

I think that it needs to be changed to a 24-hour window (or something).

On the plus side, I don't recall us ever having so many prizes being offered as is the case this year. We had a great number voting and a rather good shot at getting some nice prizes. I prefer looking at the glass is half full. That said, l appreciate the suggestions to improve the selection process. I agree it gets frustrating when it slows to a crawl.

Maybe a system where a person is given a 24 window to pick; after that, their turn is passed and the picking continues with the next in line - BUT, if they show up within the next 48 hours, they could choose a prize after the person whose turn it currently is, goes. After a total of 72 hours, that person is bumped off and the next from the "reserve" gets on the list.

Example:

It's Bob's turn. Alex sends him a PM, starting the 24 hour window.

24 hours later, Bob hasn't chosen yet, so Charlie gets to pick.

A day after that, Bob shows up, and it's currently Ed's turn. Once Ed picks, Bob gets his turn late, then Frank (who was next after Ed) gets to go and things are back to normal.

If Bob instead shows up 3 days later, he will learn that he missed his chance and now Zeb - who previously won nothing - is bumped up to bottom spot on the list.

Seems to me like this gives a fair window to pick at leisure and a generous window to not miss out entirely if you were away from the computer for a while, but still allows things to move along without one person grinding it to a halt. In order to prevent misunderstandings or confusion, when choosing a prize each and every person MUST confirm that they have PM'd the next person in line, or else their choice is considered invalid and the timer on them keeps running. This puts responsibility on the user, true, but given that we're being offered some pretty nice free stuff, that seems totally fair to me.

I would agree, but since we didn't do that on the last people, I think we can't change the "rules" on the go.

(Well we could change it since it is like I posted many times..) The Rule was
PipChick wrote:giveaway winners will have until the following Monday, February 17th, 2020 (approximately 72hrs) to respond either publicly in a post or privately through a message that they will be present and reachable to participate in selecting and claiming a prize from the giveaway among those available.

But since we did not used this rule on anyone else, I think it is not the right way to start now at random. And again, this is deep in the long text so not everybody did read it or reminds it even though it is yellow marked.

I totally agree on the 24 Hour window. I don't completely agree on the "post within 72 hours and you get to pick after the current pick". It is a nice idea, but I think the winners who know since 15 Feb 2020, 02:34 (UTC +1) that they won could at least check once every 24 hours. So maybe if you reply within 36 hours you get to pick after the current one and if you respond after that but before 72 hours, you get to the bottom of the list. So the ones who are for example on a boat trip without internet get at least a chance to pick some. This is my opinion since this is already "for free" just do votes via PM within one month or so and you have the chance to win AWESOME prizes.

But this "pick after the current one" would maybe also mess everything up. I don't know but for me it sounds like that. Cause the next one maybe doesnt follow this thread and just does his choice and the one who responded within 36 hours to pick after the current one, again does not respond.

Next year we should set up a survey of sorts where each winner ranks all of the prizes 1 to X and submits it, then the system goes through all the winners based on their priority and assigns them the desired gift based on what is left. Anyone who fails to submit the original survey within 72 hours is out and a new person is in with 24 hours to fill in the survey. This would give the whole process maybe a 1 week turnaround.

I'm not sure about ranking prizes, but I kinda get what you mean with something like a ranked-choice voting system. To expand on my idea of grouping winners in order of their numbers drawn (i.e. the first 10 names drawn are in Group A, the next 10 are in Group B, etc.), on the day your group is supposed to pick prizes, submit a ranked list of 5 prizes you'd like to receive out of the remaining prizes. Then prizes are slotted in order of the priority list and in order of their drawn number. Issues I see with that is that someone has to do the runoffs each day and post the available prizes in time for the next group to choose.

Or maybe it's larger groups of 20+, you have 2 days to submit your list of 10 prizes, there's a day to do the administrative side of announcing and slotting the prizes, then the next group goes.

Isn't that a misinterpretation of that line? There is no punctuation behind the yellow part and it says further that this is the time frame where you have to post that you're around to pick! The way I read the rule (maybe wrong) is that everyone that didn't publically (or via PM) stated that s/he is around to pick a price is out anyways. The way I read it is, that the 72h time window is only for announcing that you're available (that's why an explicit date is mentioned), not that you have 72h to claim a price after you got PMed. If you didn't announced it, bad luck. It is of course impossible to know for us who did use the PM to state that s/he is around and who didn't.
Just something I was wondering the whole 72h time frame discussion.

Yeah that's how I interpreted it too, but there's no cutoff mentioned for how long to wait in-between picks, unless I missed something.

That was on Sun Mar 01, 2020 1:09 am UTC so he still has some time to claim his price

And do I pm the next person?

I believe Dolape is opting out, as mentioned earlier in this post, which would make it my turn to pick.

I'll also take a Mystery Brick from JP Games then if this is the case.

PipChick / Dolape please confirm (sending you both a PM) and then I'll message nertzmaster who is next in line.

The 72 hours rules is due to fact that this is a large, diverse and growing forum. That' means there's a few of us who don't/can't login during the weekends due to various reasons, travel, family, work, access to wifi/internet at home/work, etc. Not all countries or even regions may have such a developed internet and wifi infrastructure like most enjoy. So we can only find the time to do so on weekdays at work or at hom.

Perhaps then the 72 hr grace period should only be for the weekends?

I'm glad the mods came up with rule that you need to confirm your availability during this period so we can eliminate those who know for sure they won't be around. In fact, I would suggest they should also make it a rule for 2020 that you include your participation in the prize drawing and availability during the prize range. That will help reduce the amount of tracking needed.

TL;DR All of this is due to the mind-boggling amount of prizes that the DOTY team manage to secure this year. It's about 3-4 times compared to the previous years. So all in all, this is a very happy problem! :D

Wouldn't it be great that 2020's DOTY takes 1 month to complete the prize claiming as we have 100+ prizes to choose from? :ugdance:
