Great info! I believe you are right. Do you have any more info (website, book etc) on the traditional handrail process? There is little info out there about the actual block carving. Everything else I can find info on.

Happy to report that I finished my first deck of my own hand wrapped hanafuda. wrapped with a dark green paper and highlighted with gold paint.
Took a while to perfect the glue thickness and technique, but got better with time. I will try to print them on gold paper next and do silver highlights.

They are “bonus cards”, not used as jokers in the poker sense - I don’t play any games that use them, hear they can be a reshuffle trigger and other such things

Omuta City celebrated its 100th anniversary on March 1, 2017!

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the implementation of the municipal system, we once again produced the 100th anniversary Karuta "Restored Tensho Trump" to widely promote "Omuta, the birthplace of Karuta".


"Karuta" is a Portuguese word meaning "small square paper", and when it was introduced to Japan from Portugal in the late 16th century, it was close to what is now called Trump. For this reason, this commemorative carta is an arrangement of "restored Tensho carta" owned by the Miike Carta Historical Museum in a card style.

You can play like normal playing cards. Please enjoy the beautifully designed playing cards while thinking about the Tensho era.

This deck is a miniature version of the Japanese Hanafuda,
When I first opened the deck I uttered to myself, " how on earth could they make it"
The deck is small, even by japanese standards ( the very name means "small flowers") - The cards are about 2 x 3 cm.
The deck is coloured by stencil, and with some silver decoration added by hand. I am informed that the black outline was printed by woodblock. If that is true , I salute the japanese block-cutter who carved the block.

and a Shiba Inu Hwatu deck, because, dogs.

Lol, I'm glad you're posting it all, but I think you passed out of hand quite a while back.

Been looking for a deck using this pattern for a while (rabbit pounding mochi in the moon and great line work) - scored from Zen:
