Early reviews of the new Avatar are positive, which blows my mind. I really expected it to just be more of the same. Supposedly, the visuals are far better than the original, and this time, there's actually character development. Believe it when I see it, but I guess I will see it before too long.
Hey, @Adamthinks, if you're going after the 23rd, maybe we should coordinate! We can watch the movie and then talk cards!
Any other Seattle-area folks interested in some kind of get-together during the holiday season?
Yeah I'd be down with that. I was actually thinking of going on the 23rd, but I'm not in a rush.

I bought a bunch of 4K Steelbooks yesterday:
- 300
- Watchmen
- Sucker Punch (1080p - Really only good for Larry Fong's and Snyder's visuals.)
- Man of Steel Jim Lee Variant
- Batman v Superman Jim Lee Variant
- Justice League Jim Lee Variant (I'm gonna throw out the discs and use it to house ZSJL.)
- Batman Begins Collector's Edition
- The Prestige Collector's Edition
- The Dark Knight Collector's Edition
- Inception Collector's Edition
- The Dark Knight Rises Collector's Edition
- Interstellar Collector's Edition
I don't have any of these in 4K (except for ZSJL), so these will be awesome to re-watch soon. I think that Christopher Nolan is the director of our time. His decade of filmography from 2005-2014 is extremely impressive. I'm really looking forward to Oppenheimer now, since there's no reason for me to see CBMs in-theaters anymore. Focus shift.

What distinguishes the Jim Lee Variants of the above movies?

The designs were drawn by Jim Lee, as opposed to using Photoshop on a shot from the movie:
The reverse-side is the same image without inks, in "original art" style.

This was a video essay made during the pandemic lockdowns, and Patrick Willems started to experiment with his frame story for his series, so if you want to skip the first part of all that, the video essay bit starts at around 3:00.

Hey, Adamthinks, I'll ping you after the Christmas holiday via PM.
Who else here is in the Seattle area who might be up for a UC movie night out? Drop a line here or via PM!
Cheers!

Going to see Avatar with my kiddos this weekend. Did anyone here enjoy the movie or was it a failure?

How close are you to the Seattle area? (like, Seattle proper). Adamthinks and I are considering going to the IMAX sometime soon. I wouldn't be able to make it this weekend, however.
If you're nearby... wanna sync up with Adamthinks and myself and anyone else we can drag to the show?

Storytelling and characterwise an absolute failure that is not even close to be en par with modern movies. But as popcorn entertainment with nice visuals it is decent. If it helps for benchmark I'd put it in the same category like the Transformes-, The Expandables- or The Fast and The Furious-series.

What are your guys' "collecting goals" for 2023?
For playing cards, the only thing I've seen upcoming that interests me is The Two Towers by KWP.
For comic books, there are a couple of Big $$$$$ Spawn books that I'll be buying this month.
This will probably be my biggest year for firearms. I want to get a revolver, a lever-action rifle, an MP5, a .300 BLK pistol, and more...

Definitely Lego. Going to get the old Aquasharks series. Lone Ranger and Western are on the vintage set list as well.
I started to run a daily 5k in early December last year so I'll definitely am going back to get more running shoes. Vaporfly 2 Next% and Asics Novablast 3 are the next goals to get. I'm looking to get either the current Adizero Prime x Strung as well or I'll wait for the Prime x Strung 2 release.
Cards have become pretty boring. Loads of releases feel like the same old, same old. Aside from Eye of the Ocean II from Lorenzo nothing that really peaks my interest. But I guess Jackson will get some bucks for his next Lord of the Rings campaign from me, too as I was in on the first one.

I thought it was fantastic. Visually it was incredibly beautiful. The 3D was great and used incredibly well, to draw you into the environment and immerse you more in the story. It was also a good story with a lot of heart. It's a simple story, but it's told well. That's always been one of James Cameron's specialties. I'm excited for the next sequel.

I enjoyed it, but I think it would have been way better if I hadn't seen it in the high frame rate. Maybe I'm just really susceptible to it, but I found it quite jarring when it shifted back and forth between 24 and 48 fps. Otherwise, I really liked it. Personally, I love the first one a little more though.

I enjoyed the film quite a lot and opted to watch in 3D. The underwater creatures were by far my favorite and the visual effects were absolutely stunning. I found parts of the story to be way too forced, almost as if they were contractually obligated to include certain actors. That being said, I didn't go for the story - just the visual feast. I can't wait to see #3.

Any predictions on who would be at the Superbowl this year? For folks outside US/that don't know what I'm talking about, it is the American football/NFL. I think Bills vs. Eagles or Chief vs. Eagles. I like Ravens or hoping Ravens win over Bengals tonight.

Eagles vs. the Chiefs or Bills are the most likely matchups. But i'm hoping the Giants find a way in.

If the Giants somehow manage to squeak their way in, I hope the Bills don't just beat them, but that they CLOBBER them!
As for the Eagles, I just hope the Bills beat them.

It'll be Chiefs vs. 49ers (or Cowboys if the 49ers don't make it). Bills are definitely going to smurf it up. Now way they'll make it. Just like the Vikings did and the Bills already almost did vs. the Fins.

Since Marvel never made an MCU Phase 3 box set, I decided to buy the important movies. I already have Infinity War and Endgame in 4K, so I bought Doctor Strange and the Spider-Man Trilogy Steelbooks. I pre-ordered Civil War and Ragnarok, too, which have upcoming Steelbooks designed by Mondo.
Not as cool as the Jim Lee DC ones, but definitely fit right into the collection:
