I was notified that Bocopo backed this project, which is operated under the suspended Jungle Lost Deer account name "sandy" who replied to comments with Bocopo's signature.

Also, if you check the campaign page, the promo style is awfully similar to the Oriental Memory marketing scheme. No way I'm backing these.

Being a little biased to Chinese themed items, I love these. They look like my students handwriting practice books. That said, I am a little leery of backing them, given who is involved. There is a strong possibility these will show up on taobao at some point.

Expected to not like these... but I actually like the design a lot In for a pair, but we'll see if the project gets cancelled

BombMagic Cosmos decks are much superior (back design).

If only there wasn’t the weird MOUNT TAI text plastered everywhere, I’d probably be in for a pair. I do love the calligraphy brush holder deck boxes though. Hmm...

Well, it was not cancelled but suspended. Shame - a good concept going to waste.

Well the lost deer one did too and it is live on their website today to buy. Hopefully these will be as well.

No surprises here tho... Bocopo should've just start doing it the legitimate way and start selling their decks on their webstore instead of false-advertising them as crowdfunding projects on KS while in truth they're already printed and waiting to ship

Thats a shame, They have some great designs IMHO. I just wish they would get their act together.

Yeah they have some that don't really appeal to me either. The lost deer didnt really but I'll have to go for the orange one. I love orange.

They are good at finding a theme and make it into a deck. However, for this specific deck, unfortunately I'm cautious about their originality as always. Some background for this deck:

This is their original design And people found the Chinese character was designed by someone else So they changed the "Mountain" character a little be and have the rendering showing on the campaign page.

Bocopo is losing a lot of Chinese fans because of the repetitive copyright issue

This is not a post to defend them at all, but a little explanation might be needed:
We view decks like this in a view of western ethics. Some eastern countries follow more closely to this (Japan, Korea) others not so much (China) One thing that I have to clarify at least once a week to my students at least once a week is that graphic designers are not the same as graphic artists. Graphic Artists create the content that Graphic Designers use. There is some overlap, but not much as graphic designers might have 10-12 projects on their plate at one time, with much shorter deadlines than graphic artists...usually. A good example of this is the ads you see on a daily basis. They were put together from found resources to make a product or service look appealing, and you are seeing one of 20-30 that were most likely put together in under a month.

A general though in China is that if you put your stuff up on the internet in a format that people can copy and use, you relinquish rights, and as such anyone can use them (This is why it is good practice for ANYONE to watermark and not put high-res images online, unless they are behind a paywall). In the west we view this as "Ripping off," in the east it is making use of available resources. Why reinvent the wheel, when you can make it look new? If you have ever visited a market in parts of Asia, you are well familiar with Caveat Emptor, Buyer Beware. Should it be encouraged? Absolutely not. Will it change anything? Not in the slightest. The idea is there are always markets that will buy, and if you dont, fine, we will find someone who will.

Its a shitty situation, and I openly condemn them for it. It is what it is. There are artists that respect the rights of others, but many that dont. Them not making a sale isnt going to phase them in the lease when there are 400 other people that can take your place.

source: I taught design and other creative subjects in China, and have had this debate with the school administration. Its a HUGE problem, but until the core ideas that fuel these practices are broken, it will not change. I will happily answer or clarify questions people have about this.

Fully agree with what macstrat says, but just want to add that since this is a "norm" in China with no immediate cause for change, no wonder HUAWEI and many other Chinese businesses---using the cunning practice from this gray-zoned habit to steal international intellectual properties.

If they (including Bocopo) want to do it like this, keep the business to their country and don't even bother to do business on the international ground.

I've heard similar stories about Chinese students who study abroad in the US and are surprised at how strict the penalties are for plagiarism (usually somewhere between failing the class and being expelled), it's a very thorny issue

It's bad. Part of it is that originality is not taught in schools. For some of my classes I would assign powerpoints on ANY subject they wanted. I would get 20 of the exact same powerpoint with different images. Another part is that becasue they teach for the test, it prohibits the ability to think abstractly. its all rote for what is on the test. The discapline isnt left up to the school, its left up to teacher to do as they please. I averaged 60-80 students per class, with 5 classes a week. Keeping track of the cheating myself became impossible. The schools are funded part by gvmt and part by parents, so when the parents complain about their kids grades, the school just fixes them. Its a systemic issue.

I was not following closely to these decks, someone asked Bocopo if they have bought the copyright but not sure if they have answered that question.

However, they did change the design after people pointed this out.
