What is your personal preference when receiving a signed deck?

• Signed on the cellophane
  
  Cellophane removed and signed on the deck
  
  Deck opened and signed on the card

I'm guessing that no one really wants that last one, but I'm throwing it out there. Do you think a creator should just give the option for any of the above?

I can't decide what's the most practical. On one hand, having the signature on the cello means the deck stays perfect... but then the signature is at risk. I had a signed deck of clipped wings that I kept in the bubble wrap it was sent in... which protected it, but was kindof a bummer

On the other hand, having the signature directly on the tuck makes it more permanent, at the cost of protecting the deck. And if that deck didn't have a seal? I'm not sure what I'd do. I think this is one of the few times I would rather that the deck have a seal

I have only a few decks with signatures. I believe they are all on a card. Either inside the tuck or as a side piece not part of the deck.

As a collector that opens all of their decks and rarely buys 2 of any deck I would probably prefer on the tuck directly out of the 3. Although, that brings up another issue of the signature messing with the design on the tuck in many cases.

I am sure there are as many opinions and reasons as there are collectors.

And since they were mentioned in the OP, I strongly dislike seals [emoji39]. Had to mention it lol.

I know this is not what was asked, and many may not share my sentiments, but I prefer no signatures.

I have one or two which have been signed on the cello, and it doesn't take long/much for it to fade away.

A single card I wouldn't say makes an entire deck signed, since you could add it to any deck (replacing the signed card with an unsigned one).

So for me, the only option that qualifies as a signed deck (that will last) is signed on the tuck of a sealed deck.

BUT, this is my stance as well. I've never seen the value in signatures, on decks or elsewhere.

It is kind of neat and novel to have different items signed but I've not been able to justify the exorbitant price for them. However, many people will pay that and that's why they are so expensive.

Every creator needs to be told this: sign it directly on the tuck or don't bother.

Sometimes it's about a perceived value, and sometimes its sentimental. I suppose it's possible for it to be both... but in my experience not. I have a deck of Sentinels with a joker that was signed by Wayne Houchin when I met him years ago. I will never give that up. But conversely, I wouldn't pay money for an object like that. That experience is kindof bound up with it.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses. I'm leaning hard toward directly on the tuck, but since my first project doesn't have a seal, I'm going to let backers choose, armed with the knowledge of the pros and cons. Better than the disappointment of getting something you weren't expecting.

Getting something signed in person when meeting someone has much more "value" I think than just buying an item with a signature. The instant markup for 3 seconds of someone's time signing something generally isn't worth it for me.

I think I have a Bicycle Reserve Note where the tuck was signed under the cello. Which is ideal if your into signatures.

If a deck is going to be signed, I prefer it to be on the tuck base like Lorenzo's Chat Rouge Red Label and not over the top of the artwork.

As someone who couldn't care less about signatures on decks of playing cards; Offering options seems the best choice.

As mentioned, sigs-on-cello just don't stand the test of time.

I suppose sigs on decks with tuck seals aren't bad. You'd still know the cards are allegedly "mint" inside the tuck.

If you're going to do it, commit and sign it directly on the tuck (perferably in blood, but I'm sure that's just my own personal preference )

to expand on what Tom said, signatures on cello are a complete waste as they easily smear and/or fade over time... besides, chances are if your backers are a big enough fan to actually pay you extra for *your* signature, they're bound to have an extra of the deck anyways

It doesn't matter to me much. I will take a signature wherever. I guess I would prefer it on the tuck instead of the cellophane for the reasons mentioned. However, some don't like that precious wrap being taken off for any reason.

Since we are on the topic of signatures. Below is a photo from Stockholm17's Patreon page of him signing many of the decks. This year or shipment comes just once, at the end of the year. I understand Lorenzo will be opening whole new Patreon tiers next year with more slots available if anyone is interested.

I think if the signature has value to it, it really doesn't matter where it is, it just matters who the person is signing it. Anyone that cares otherwise is probably more interested in the resale value aspect rather than having something that feels personalized. That being said, my preference would be on the tuck since it makes it more permanent, and making it feel more personal just because of the extra little step of removing the cellophane first. Signing on a card or the inside of the tuck also feels really personalized, but might require a bit more creativity to display it if that's the intention.

Ultimately, after consulting with the affected backers, I decided to unwrap and sign them, sealing them myself with laser-etched aluminum stickers. [made on earth]
(last image is a prototype deck I tested it on, which is why the tuck is different.)

Something to consider. Since many artists charge extra for their signatures, they could remove the cellos, sign and put the deck in a Card sleeve like Carat's DS1 sleeves. We've paid for it, so protecting the deck with a DS sleeve and maybe seal the sleeve to show the authencity would be good.

You could even leave the cello on if you're putting it in a DS1, though I guess the permanence of having it straight on the deck is nicer...
