WILD WEST: Deadwood & The Black Hills Decks - April KS

Unread post by RandyButterfield »

Hey Everyone,

My next fully-custom design, the WILD WEST: Deadwood and WILD WEST: The Black Hills Decks, are almost finished up! For this one, I'm hand-drawing every element (minus the Fonts) in pencil on paper. Doing all the hard work off the computer is a nice change of pace!

Below are the Back Cards and three Courts from each Deck. The Brown / Cream combo is the Deadwood Deck. The Brown / Grey combo is The Black Hills Deck.

Other Courts include Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock, Buffalo Bill Cody, George Custer, Elizabeth Custer, Crazy Horse, Phoebe Hearst and Potato Creek Johnny.

They'll be printed by Legends (TAIWAN Printer).

The Kickstarter will launch in early April.

Thanks, Randy

The last Wild West deck that I can recall was from those Ukrainian clowns that tried to bully UC members and it was extremely underwhelming quality-wise.

Based on the above pics, Randy’s deck should be great. Can’t wait.

I was looking to avoid mentioning those clowns and their "security" (harassment, really) team.

I must admit that I really like them although they do not jump out at me. I believe embossing the font will go a long way in making them look a lot better.

I likely won't be getting these, but I have to say that the tuck boxes look great. The tuck colors, and the line work colors, perfectly compliment the scenes that were drawn. I wouldn't change a think design-wise. As vasta said, embossed lettering will probably make them look even better.

The theme just isn't for me. That may be because of Will Smith's Wild Wild West, and Cowboys vs Aliens, etc... I think people who grew up on those old cowboy shows and movies probably have a healthy interest in the subject matter.

They remind me quite a bit of the Jody Eklund decks but I do like the cards and the tucks (and yes, they would benefit from embossing).

Really liking these Randy! The tucks look good and would benefit from some embossing. The backs of the cards remind me very much of the 1st LUXX decks which you designed.

Thanks Flyers!

It could be because I tackled the LUXX and Wild West Back Cards in a similar way - built the designs after drawing the base swirl elements. Attached are the pencil drawings I used for the Wild West Backs.

Embossing will be the first Stretch Goal, to protect the budget. Right off the bat, both Tucks will have exteriors with 4-Color Process + White FOIL + Gold FOIL and interiors with a 4-Color Process design.

Magic Tapp - I knew there would be comparisons to Jody’s work, based on the Tuck Logos. I went through a lot of Logo variations, and the decorative serif font just had the right vibe.

TwoPiece - You’re watching all the wrong Westerns! What about good Westerns like Tombstone, Unforgiven, Django Unchained, Hostiles or my favorite, HBO’s Deadwood series (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mFIojradr4Y" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)?

Thanks, Randy

No Wyatt. I’m concentrating on people from the Black shills / Deadwood / Montana regions.

Wyatt spent a winter in Deadwood, but I didn’t think it justified including him.
Plus, I wanted to save the Earps and Cowboys for a future WILD WEST: Tombstone design!

Also, thanks Jody!!

Shouldn't the backgrounds be different since you have Black Hills deck? I don't know if they had town like Deadwood did.

Hey Rich,

The backgrounds are matched up with corresponding suits (breakdown below).

The Clubs and Spades Courts and Backgrounds focus on characters specific to Deadwood.

The Hearts and Diamonds Courts and Backgrounds focus on characters important to The Black Hills and Montana regions.

I guess I could make the Ace of Hearts (Native American Village background) the hero Ace for the Black Hills Deck? That would actually make a lot of sense! Thanks Rich!!

Thanks, Randy

SPADES - Saloon Interior Background
King Spades - Wild Bill Hickok
Queen Spades - Calamity Jane
Jack Spades - Potato Creek Johnny

CLUBS - Deadwood Main Street Background
King Clubs - Seth Bullock
Queen Clubs - Phoebe Hearst
Jack Clubs - George Hearst

HEARTS - Native American Village Background
King Hearts - Buffalo Bill Cody
Queen Hearts - Annie Oakley
Jack Hearts - Sitting Bull

DIAMONDS - The Needle of the Black Hills Background
King Diamonds - George A. Custer
Queen Diamonds - Elizabeth Bacon Custer
Jack Diamonds - Crazy Horse

This is why I love you, Randy. Actual thought and research into your choices as you design! Given the way things played out, maybe Crazy Horse should be the K-D?

Thanks for the idea!! I switched Custer to the JOD, and Crazy Horse to the KOD.

I just finished everything last night. And it’s looking like the Tuck Boxes will use a FOAM Ink for the White in the Logos! Lawrence is doing a test now, just to make sure it will work.

I’ll be launching on Monday, at Noon EDT!

Here’s the super early Kickstarter Preview Link (I still have some minor changes to fix):

That's a pretty cool coin as far as coins go. And I think I have gilding fatigue so I'll only be pledging for a standard pair but I'll be there! Thanks for the preview link.

I like it. When I was looking at the campaign though I was thinking this was from Jody Eklund and had to say in my mind “No, this is Randy’s design.” I also really like the dealer coin. I normally don’t buy them, but I will definitely pick up at least one.

Randy, looking good. My only suggestion, after seeing your change on the Diamond courts, is to do the same with the Hearts and make Sitting Bull the King. He is a Chief, after all, and it would add to the symmetry with Diamonds if a Native American were king in the Black Hills.

Hey Daniel,

I’ll think about that one. I’ll probably leave Sitting Bull as the Jack though.

Changing Crazy Horse to the King of Diamonds made sense because the Diamonds were mostly about the 2 main characters from the Battle of Little Bighorn.

For the Hearts, my focus is on Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show (which Sitting Bull and Annie Oakley were a part of). I put Buffalo Bill as the King of Hearts because he’s the owner and showman for the Wild West Show.

Thanks, Randy

Yes, it is very much Jody-esque but I like the Randy twist on it.

I also really like the coin design.

Yay, there's going to be a booklet! I know it's tough for the creators to make them due to the min order and being saddled with the excess stock. Good art and history deserves a special space for them. The booklets allow the art to be displayed in a bigger format and learning comes into the fun as well. (more justification to the wife on supporting these decks! :? :D )

Yep, I did Black Gilding with the Draconian Wildfire Deck, in that campaign’s Gilded Trio Set. It’s pretty sweet looking!

Here was some photos I took from that set, they’re even cooler in person (after the Honeybee shoutout):
