Were these not supposed to be fully custom? I'm not alleging anything, just seems very odd to say that and then find this.

They just updated and claimed that they did not steal. The version 1 printed in 2020? And posted on Facebook more than 1 year ago.

Well, fully custom means fully custom, not necessarly original, although I can see why some one would assume it @Piazza.

It’s very possible Asad hired an artist and this is what the artist delivered. Don’t think it’s necessarily on Asad to vet the origin of the work especially if he was told it’s original. Asad May be the biggest victim here.

“Tastefully customized face card designs that pay homage to traditional aesthetics.”

It seems fully custom was not stated, but “tastefully customized” - I doubt that was an accidental phrase.

@Omar, yes and no. Absolutely correct that, if you pay someone for something you should get what you payed for but ultimatively it's your name on the project so, there is that.

If I didn't overread it, no one ever claimed the court design to be original though so, no harm done yet in my book. It's a fun coincedence that two campaigns use the same template almost simultaniously though.

Reading the other comments it seems that fully custom means original to y'all? These courts are still fully custom, imo.

I think it counts as fully custom but I also think it's a little disappointing to learn the designer just copy/pasted a commercially available template.

I'm pretty sure i've seen this court design on another deck, in fact I looked over the weekend using Google Lens to see if I could find it but no joy.

The debate around waht consititutes "fully custom" is an interesting one for sure. To me it means original courts AND pips, not modified.

In Asad's Kickstarter kickoff livestream, if I recall correctly, he said he purchased the design some time ago from Edo Huang (I'm pretty sure that who it was - it was a name that was familiar to me) and had been waiting for the right project to use it on. I suppose its possible the purchase was a right to use the design versus paying for exclusivity

yet this is what happens in what % of decks? any deck with standard courts do this exact thing and get praised for it (by some). overall, i think it is a bit hypocritical for people to get a bit bent on them being cut and paste or not original when so many of the decks people go apes#$t over are standard courts or a version of.

I don't think you can compare this to modified standard courts. People keep standard courts for a specific reason (to make the cards useable for games and magic) and modification is deliberately kept minimal for those reasons. It's different if you create brand new courts and expectations change accordingly. In those cases, people want design/art from the designer that makes the deck something special, so it isn't the same thing at all.

Original is overrated for me.
My flow chart is easy: Do I like them?
Yes ---> purchase
No ---> move on

just because you can or want to ascribe certain reasons to it, doesn't mean it isn't the same. in practice, it is cut and paste. courts that are already made that you have little or no modification. i would agree SOME do this ''to make the cards {more} useable for games and magic'', cards are useable for these purposes with out being standard and some companies/designers just do this because it is easy and lazy and accepted, using what you stated as an excuse because they have barely a creative bone in their body, if they even try and excuse it at all.

While I might argue one way or another for creativity or what custom means, I just never liked them and never will.

Mind you, I am a fan of 52Kards as a store - and Fulton’s has taught me just how hyped slightly recolored standard faces can be - so I’m not throwing shade at them - just really hate those courts.

Im trying to remember, but now that I think on it, he may have been referring to the back design. That would make sense, given the finding of the link above where the courts can be purchased.

This was recently brought to my attention. To be honest, I was under the assumption that the court designs I acquired for this project were completely original, but thankfully I never made that claim publicly. It's a bit disappointing, but I’m not entirely surprised as it’s a common practice for playing card designers to use stock court designs as a base, and then customize them. The main focus and emphasis of this project for me was the back design, but I do plan on getting the court cards completely redesigned for the eventual 2nd edition after all the feedback surrounding this.

I'd also like to clarify the origins of this deck and clearly state that the designer (Edo Huang) is not at fault for anything unprofessional here. I didn't hire Edo to design this deck from scratch. Rather, I stumbled across this post he made on his Instagram page way back in 2017: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bb0764tgXGV ... MTA2M2Y%3D

The photo is of a prototype deck of the Waves back design (he called the design "Liquid" back then). I loved the back design so much that I decided to acquire it from him and produce it through 52Kards. We worked out a deal and then we started fleshing out the rest of the design aspects of the deck. When he presented the court card designs as an option I incorrectly assumed that they were completely original since they were so different from court designs that I'm used to seeing. I didn't ask too many questions as I knew the main selling point of the deck was the back design, and the originality of the faces wasn't really on my mind. There's no need for any controversy here as no one claimed the court cards were completely original.

I was very on-the-fence for this project, but I ended up backing it ultimately because I like the back design a lot. The fact that it just didn't mesh with the design of the faces is a very large part of why I was on-the-fence. But, as I say, at the end of the day, it was the full-bleed version of the backs that tipped me onto the side of backing.

That said, if I'd realized that Edo Huang was the designer in question, that would have nudged me off the fence in the other direction. This designer has, in the past, claimed work to be original that was later shown to be absolutely cut-and-paste from what amounts to clip art. IIRC, I think he may have started arguing semantics at that point (maybe it was his defenders, I'm not sure; it's been a long time since that particular deck), but either way, I just flipped the bit on projects credited to him. He may be a great guy and I have no beef with him personally, but I'm not generally inclined to throw original artist money at clip art projects.

I am also aware that others do back his projects and like what they receive, and I have no desire to try to rain on anybody's parade.

Truly, I don't think anybody here has behaved dishonorably with regard to this project, and Asad has nothing to apologize for. I don't think anything here was really misrepresented, the usual hype factors notwithstanding. I look forward to getting my decks, and I fully anticipate putting one into my nightly rotation, but the fact that Edo Huang essentially continues to build his designs on clip art is... well, it is what it is.

That said, when I see "fully customized," I expect more than recolored standards or clip art, but I also know that the term has been misused to mean recolored on more than one occasion. >shrug<

KS update wrote:I have another update regarding the Foil Edition Waves deck which was introduced as an Add On item during the campaign. This was an extremely limited deck release with only 1,000 decks available and they were all claimed rather quickly. I didn't post any images of this deck design as it's difficult to present foil accurately in a mockup, but I verbally described the design concept as being an inverted borderless design with a white background and the Waves design pattern printed with a black cold foil.

After corresponding back and forth with Cartamundi, they have informed me that due to their particular cold foiling process, it's recommended to use a foil that has a lighter color shade rather than a darker color shade in order to achieve the best possible foil appearance. If we were to proceed with black foil, the end result would be different than a hot foiling process and would likely have the black foil looking a bit "muted" and not as shiny or glimmering as we would hope.

With this in mind, I've decided to change the color scheme around for this version of the deck in order to ensure we get the best looking cards possible. Instead of a white borderless background and the Waves design pattern in black foil; the updated back design will now have a black borderless background and the Waves design pattern in SILVER foil. The silver foil will have much more shine as it reflects more light, and the stark contrast between the glimmering silver and the black background will create an extremely eye catching and aesthetic deck.

I'm confident that this new color scheme will be more attractive than the original color scheme that I presented. That being said, if any backers who claimed this deck are no longer interested in it due to this color change, you are more than welcome to send us a message requesting to remove the deck(s) from your reward package and we will send you refund.

Everything else about this deck will remain the same (1,000 deck print run, borderless design, custom serialized seal, etc.)

They should have mentioned hsbc by name on the ad card - or haven’t they heard tales of his boldness?

I heard that he emits an aura that dissolves glue - traveling the back country with his blue ox babe - though I might be mixing him up with someone else there…

Free imperfect Waves. Just pay shipping. 2 deck limit per person. At 52kards. Great for those who missed out.
Hey Waves Backer!

Long time no talk.. I hope you are enjoying your decks of Waves playing cards! This deck never would have been made without your support and as a token of appreciation we are offering a free bonus to our Kickstarter backers.

Claim up to 2x more Waves decks for FREE!
No, this is not a joke. This is real. These decks typically retail for $17 each, but now you can get them for FREE. Limited to 2 decks per person and while supplies last.

Why are we doing this?
Long story short: When we received our inventory of Waves from the manufacturer back in 2023, a whole bunch of decks arrived with very minor defects in their tuck cases. It's mainly just small imperfections with the cellophane wrapping or the box seal. The cards themselves are in perfect condition.

We don't ship decks to customers unless they are in mint condition so this large batch of slightly imperfect decks have been sitting around collecting dust for a while now. The original decks you received are likely a bit worn out by now, so it's a good time to give these extra decks away to our awesome backers who will actually use and enjoy them!

What's the catch?
There really isn't one. The only thing is that you will need to pay the shipping cost to receive the free decks (very affordable, especially for USA customers). We would love for you to browse our shop and see if any other items happen to catch your interest, but it isn't necessary. We offer free USA shipping on all orders over $52.

How to claim your free Waves decks

Step 1: Add the free decks to your cart

Visit our website and go to the product page for these imperfect Waves decks. Add up to 2 decks to your cart:

https://shop.52kards.com/products/imperfect_waves

Step 2: Add any other items if you want to

We would love for you to browse our shop to see if you would like to add any other items to your shopping cart, but it isn't necessary. We are an authorized retailer for all the top brands in cards and magic and offer free shipping on USA orders over $52.

https://shop.52kards.com

Step 3: Place your order

Proceed to checkout your oder and you are done! We typically ship out orders within 24 business hours, but it will take us a bit longer for these since we are expecting an influx of orders.

Disclaimer: this offer is only available while supplies last. Claim your free decks before we run out!
