Avionics by Penguin Magic (ill. Douglas Fuchs)

Unread post by hsbc »

Avionics Playing Cards, $20.00

For many years, major airlines provided souvenir decks to their passengers. Avionics playing cards pay tribute to this practice from days gone by with a design that feels lost in time - equally at home in your collection today as it would have been decades ago.

Designer Douglas Fuchs, known for his work on the Robots, Retro Rockets, Bioluminescent, and Sorcerer's Apprentice decks has created a timeless tribute deck that works perfectly for games & magic tricks.

The back design features airplanes & clocks in a patterned design with a white border. The blue-green color scheme is the perfect choice for a timeless deck. The faces include a custom Ace of Spades and two custom Jokers alongside the Penguin Custom Standard court & number cards. Two gaff cards are included for magic tricks.

The deck is printed with Penguin Magic's exclusive UltraLux™ Finish and AquaFlow™ Coating. This combination of casino-grade European card stock and water-based coating makes the deck handle like an absolute dream. The cards are traditionally cut with smooth edges that provide just the right amount of grip. These cards are soft enough to get to work straight out of the box, but durable enough to meet the needs of a full-time magician, cardist, or card sharp.

The stylish tuck box comes complete with inside printing and is topped off with a custom sticker seal, individually numbered out of 500.

•Ultra-limited print run of 500 decks
•Designed by Douglas Fuchs
•UltraLux™ Finish with AquaFlow™ Coating
•Traditionally cut
•Custom tuck box with inside & outside printing
•Double back and blank face gaff cards included
•Individually-numbered custom sticker seal

This does double up some of the info and pictures from the above post, but here's a short write-up I put together, along with some of the promo pictures of this new deck.

The Avionics Playing Cards is the latest release from Penguin Magic:

This deck is being released in a limited edition of 500 (individually numbered), and is included free with >$100 purchases as part of their current TGIF offer, and is also available for separate purchase at $20.

The deck is billed as evoking "the excitement and adventure of vintage air travel", and pays tribute to the time when major airlines provided souvenir decks to their passengers.

The back design employs a tesselated tile pattern consisting of miniature airplanes.

Penguin's custom faces ensure that it remains practical and functional.

A custom Ace of Spades and custom Jokers that match the blue/green color scheme and style.

The deck uses Penguin Magic's popular UltraLux stock, and a couple of gaff cards are also included.

This deck is fantastic. I sure do wish it was just a regular release and sold for around $10. Penguin has been killing it the past couple years, especially with their free US shipping (I have no clue how they can still sustain that). When the TGIF decks came out, I didn't mind the sales tactic, even though I did wish I could own a few but I wasn't going to spend $100 every time.

However, even though they're now available to buy, the frequency in which they are released has me frustrated. They're coming out almost as regularly as their "standard" custom decks. I would even understand if it were a deck with exotic features, but aside from the self-created rarity, I don't see why it has to be so expensive.

The money for free shipping has to come from somewhere.
You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that’s being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.

Seemingly it comes from quantity moved, because it seems to me that penguin usually has the lowest prices to go with their free shipping…

As far as I'm concerned, there doesn't need to be more than one "hommage to the airplane souvenir decks" deck, and Jetsetter does this better.
