Custom hand drawn modern art styled deck with characters, never seen before. Illustrations created by Maike Venhofen and Stefan Grosse

The idea for this deck is unique characters with a modern touch, unique and interesting-looking.

The main intention was to create a style of cards, never seen before. Each of the court cards, especially the ace cards, should contain at least one little nice detail: like King with tv-remote and a beer cup, or a glamorously looking Queen with long cigarette, or a glass of wine :)

All illustrations are completely custom hand-drawn with the help of unique Stippling technique that uses small dots to create degrees of solidity, shading and shadows.

There is a lot that I really like about these!
However, I'm not crazy about the one-way courts and the changes you made to the suits (Clubs are X's, and Spades are triangles???).
Is it too late to reconsider these decisions?

These aren't bad, but I agree about the clubs and spades pips not being the best idea and definitely a turnoff for me at least. And I know that one way backs and one way courts are turnoffs for a lot of people and the indices aren't in the best place either. Certainly not the most usuable deck of cards.

First, that female joker needs changes. It looks like a modern day roller derby girl and does not fit at all. She's also wearing a modern buckle belt not invented until 1600s and used by military. No woman during any time outside of the last 100 years would even have or wear an outfit like that.

I do like the art style overall, but the bordered shadow back isn't working for me. I agree with concerns on the pips - from a playability viewpoint it's not a good idea to change colors or symbols, but for an artistic deck it can vary a bit, but the diamond is simply too ornate to be recognizable and that's a greater concern. NPCC I'm not crazy about, but the few I've gotten have been adequate. If it was cheaper or if I wasn't backing off on my purchases I would have considered it.

Good luck!

The only thing I like about this deck is the Jokers. I think the jokers are awesome.

Literally everything is one-way. I can understand when courts done in a certain style or particular elements of a back design might justify them not being completely mirrored, but everything? For me, two-way designs are a big part of what distinguishes playing card art from just generic art. Even one aspect being blatantly one-way without the designer even trying to mirror it is pretty much always a deal breaker and tells me the designer didn't put enough effort into the deck.

My usual one-way rant aside, there's plenty of other problems with this deck. I don't think changing only some of the suit symbols are a good idea (clubs being changed to something completely different compared to the rest); either go all in and change them all (risky), or keep them mostly the same. Using 4 custom colors for the suits carries a similar risk, but these are actually growing on me. Text on the back design is never a good idea, and having the suit symbols on it is a rookie move that has been done countless times before. And the back design being on an off-white background with white borders around that again just doesn't work. The indices are way too far from the edge, the whole point of indices is that they're easy to see when you have lots of cards in your hand or when peeking at them in a hold-em type game.

There's good stuff in here too, though. The art is good, but as previously mentioned needs to be made FOR playing cards rather than just fitted onto them. I like the ornate pips (clubs being changed notwithstanding) and the custom aces. I also like the pip placement and having the value in the middle of them, although that might be a highly subjective element.

I wish you good luck. There's potential here, but lots of things to improve upon.

Thanks everyone for feedback!
Well, we can't deny that design is very... controversial.
Not a surprise, that someone likes it, someone - not

For everyone, who likes the idea of the deck, but concerned about playability and one-way design - we've come up with CLASSIC version of the deck. It will feature 2-way back, standard pips (moved closer to the edges), rearranged layout on numbered cards, and removed number from the center. So now, only court cards are 1-way.
